I like to go on DIY websites to get inspired, but I haven’t been on any in a long time. Today I remembered why.

I think it’s great when people post tutorials for making their own necklaces that look similar to the ones worn on runways. I don’t think taking someone’s idea and not paying for it is okay, but if you take the basis design elements and expand upon it with your own creativity, I think that’s great. But even if you’re just providing a knock-off, who cares if one of those millionaire fashion designers misses out on a sale?

The difference comes into play when you are showing other people how to make things, that are exactly like an independent seller’s. Maybe you think that Etsy seller charges too much for their designs. But it is not okay to just rip off their design and (figuratively) sell it to the masses. A lot of Etsy sellers rely on their shop sales to make a living, or work as well as sell, using the funds to make ends meet. True, the people you are ripping off are probably not those people, but you don’t know that.

Rant over.
