APE IN A CAPE: Now I'm Getting PMs About How "Reverse Racism" Exists

gailsimone:

Arggh.

The difference, guys?

The entire society is open to white people. Virtually nothing is denied to white people because of their skin color. Incidents of white people being discriminated against for skin color tend to be both fleeting and personal. Incidents of POC’s being discriminated…

I used to be a person who believed in reverse racism, but then after much debate and explaining I finally understood.  Two definitions of racism are as follows:

1.

a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one’s own race is superior and has the right to rule others.

2.
a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination.

Therefore, racism is based on believing you are better than someone because of your skin colour, and this belief of yours is systemic. This is exactly why there is no such thing as reverse racism.
If a POC exhibits behaviour you find to be racist, it is not because they think you are inferior to them. They are doing it because of stereotypes they have created based on Historical precident. Ever since white people saw POC, they thought they were better than them. So, they aren’t rude to you because they think you are a different species, but because they think you will be racist towards them, as history has shown them. Continually. For an example, in the film “Freedom Writers” a POC student yells ” I HATE white people” but does not follow it with mocking their looks or skin tone (as racists tend to do) she says
“I know what you can do. I saw white cops shoot my friend in the back for reaching into his pocket, his pocket! I saw white cops come into my house and take my father away for no REASON except they feel like it! Except because they can! And they can, because they’re white. So I HATE white people on sight!”
She doesn’t hate white people because she thinks they are inferior, she hates them because of what a few have done to her, her friends and her family. And that’s a stereotype - not racism.
Even if the POC you thought was being racist actually said “Because you are white, you are inferior to me” it still wouldn’t be racist. Because racism needs to be systemic, which here means that it needs to stem from a position of power or be the societal norm. “Reverse Racism” as it is called, is niether.
I hope this has helped you understand. I understand if it hasn’t, because maybe it wouldn’t have helped me when I first saw it. However, know that when you say this, you look like someone who has everything looking for something to complain about.
